Resident Evil goes out with a bang.
The all-time most successful movie franchise based off a video game concludes its 15-year run with an exhilarating finish in the series sixth installment Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The cast led by Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element & Zoolander 2) and Ali Larter (Pitch & Obsessed) return as Alice and Claire Redfield, respectively. Jovovich takes the heroine to another notch in the finale for Alice.
“This is definitely the biggest and the best,” Jovovich said Thursday on Good Morning America.
Alice seeks to return to The Hive to capture an anti-virus she is led to believe will disarm the T-virus, thus cure all the zombies that have taken over the world. She’s also motivated by a chance to get even with Wesker and Umbrella Corporation, the organization behind the whole saga. When she returns to Raccoon City she reunites with Claire Redfield who is teamed up with a group of survivors.
Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) returns and poses as a roadblock for Alice. Despite Alice’s efforts early on, he continues to pose as a serious threat to Alice. Those familiar with the series saw him die in the third installment Resident Evil: Extinction. However, there’s an explanation for his return.
Earlier films in this series reveal that Alice can’t remember much about her past before she awakened in the mansion. Concluding Alice’s story this film brings closure to this aspect when Alice discovers the truth about her past.
It all wraps up with a twist you will not see coming but ties everything together. In the fast-paced action thriller Alice will make a sacrifice. You will have to see for yourself how severe it is.
This film is a family affair for Jovovich with her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, directing the film and her daughter, Ever Anderson, making her acting debut. In Ever’s first outing as Red Queen she enacted the troublesome child turned computer machine to perfection, capturing the voice and aura of this character.
Among many smashing and head turning stunts one highlight in this film comes when Alice must choose the best course of action when she’s surrounded. Literally, looking at what options are on the table for her, Alice calculates each risk and the film shows what stunt she is thinking when she eyes each individual item. After weighing the cons for each decision she quickly makes the move viewers are accustomed to seeing Alice pull off when she’s in a jam…which is the most unpredictable move that her enemy would never see coming.
As usual, Jovovich and Larter make an invincible team in their third Resident Evil together in this female driven heroine series. A change in pace to the usual male dominated role.
“It’s something that’s incredible, being in something that’s female led,” Larter said on Good Morning America. “After being on these three movies together you don’t see us (characters Alice and Claire) pitting against each other. It’s about women picking each other up and you don’t fall in these cliché traps…we need these girls.”
Be sure to stay when the credits roll at the end of the film to hear a special message from Red Queen.
